One midnight, Watson was awakened by someone tiptoeing outside. He opened the door quietly to see a long shadow in the hall way. He secretly followed the shadow into a room. The shadow turned out to be the housekeeper! The housekeeper gazed at the moor in the darkness for several minutes, then put out the candle impatiently. The next day, Watson described his finding to Henry, the new owner of the manor. They guessed the housekeeper must have the top secret. They decided to follow him to make it clear.
Later, they found out the criminal at large was the hostess' brother, hiding in the moors. This couple would not like to see him starving to death. So at midnight they showed him with the candlelight his food was ready. If he responded with the light of lamp, that meant he knew it. Then the housekeeper would signal him with another kind of light to indicate where his food was placed.
That night, holding their guns, Watson and Henry decided to go to have a look at the criminal's hiding place. When they found him and got ready to catch him, they suddenly saw a tall and thin man standing on a distant rock. But this man disappeared shortly. The whole moors were covered under a mysterious and horrible atmosphere.
